OUR HERITAGE
Over 120 Years of Pound Farm Shop
THE FOUNDATION OF OUR FARM
Rooted in Gloucestershire History
The long-standing heritage of Pound Farm Shop began back in 1902 when our family first moved onto the land here in Whaddon. Over the last 120 years, spanning five dedicated generations, we have grown from a traditional, hard-working agricultural holding into a vibrant, multi-faceted countryside destination for the local Gloucester community. While our farm shop building was beautifully and completely rebuilt in 2015 to secure our future for generations to come, our core values have never wavered.
Today, Pound Farm Shop stands as a proud testament to authentic country heritage, sustainable British farming practices, and an uncompromising dedication to outstanding local quality. We believe in bridging the gap between the field and your fork, ensuring that everything from our home-reared meats to our artisan pantry staples tells a story of genuine passion and complete traceability.
FIVE GENERATIONS
The Heritage Behind Pound Farm Shop
The long history of Pound Farm Shop began with the Smart family in 1902. In the 1960s, Eileen Smart married local farmer John Hyett, deeply strengthening our connection to the Gloucestershire countryside. Their son, Gerald Hyett, introduced the horticultural side of the business alongside his wife, Jenny, who passionately expanded our fresh produce offerings.
Following the rebuilding of the main shop in 2015, the family tradition continues seamlessly. Today, Jenny and Gerald’s daughter Kate manages the daily running of the shop, while their daughter-in-law Rebeka manages the bustling café within it. Meanwhile, their son Rich manages the active agricultural side, always looking for progressive new ideas to move Pound Farm Shop forward into the future.
PROUDLY INDEPENDENT
A Traditional, 250-Acre Working Farm
What truly sets Pound Farm Shop apart from standard retail outlets is that we are an active, fully operational 250-acre working farm. Our agricultural year follows the natural country seasons, starting early with spring lambing for our flock of breeding ewes. We proudly rear a traditional herd of over 40 cattle, alongside our pigs and poultry, ensuring every animal experiences the highest standard of care on our pastures.
During the summer months, our team is out in the fields harvesting our own hay and silage to store away as nutritious feed for our livestock through the cold winter. When you source food from the Pound Farm Shop counter, you are supporting completely traceable, honest British farming.
GROWN IN GLOUCESTER
Decades of Homegrown Crops & Produce
True traditional agriculture remains at the absolute heart of Pound Farm Shop. We have been growing our own famous farm potatoes right here for over 60 years, cultivating exceptional local varieties, including Marfona, Red Desiree, Soraya, and Maris Piper. To keep our soils rich, fertile, and naturally healthy, we utilise a strict five-year crop rotation system across our fields.
Our seasonal specialities expand throughout the year—from planting seeds for our handpicked Halloween pumpkins, squashes, and gourds to rearing premium turkeys, cockerels, and geese for Christmas pre-orders. Handpicked by our family and sold fresh at the Pound Farm Shop counter, our produce brings genuine homegrown quality directly from our fields to your kitchen.

An excellent family business with a garden plant shop with all the choice you could need at reasonable prices. There is a really excellent coffee shop with home cooked cakes and sandwiches, the coffee is amongst the best in the area. There is also a very well stocked little farm shop which gets most of its products from local suppliers. The staff are friendly and helpful even when really busy, which is frequently. Would highly recommend.Posted on Google![]()
