About Us And The Farm
The Family
Since the family moved into Pound Farm in 1901, the farm has grown with us to become a thriving business, with the 5th generation keen to take over the business in years to come. Originally the Brunt family moved from Somerset to Gloucester, where they started farming and selling extra produce to the local community.
The Granddaughter, Eileen Brunt, brought new ideas with the introduction of turkeys. After attending Usk College in the 50’s she married local farmer John Hyett in 1954, and carried on farming at Pound Farm, increased selling produce and opened a shop. Their son, Gerald Hyett, had a keen interest in horticulture, studying at Pershore College and bringing back his knowledge to set up the plants side of the business with the help of his wife, Jenny, who expanded the amount of produce and local products we sold in the shop. In 2016, the shop was rebuilt as the original shop had become cramped.
Jenny and Gerald’s daughter Kate keeps the shop and café topped up with homemade cakes and pies, baked in the kitchen within the shop. Their son Rich keeps the farm updated and moving forwards, always looking for new ideas with his wife Rebeka, who opened up a café in 2020.
On the farm, during the early months of the year, lambing begins, with a small herd of 60 ewes that need round the day care to ensure they stay healthy during lambing. When the weather starts to warm up, we prep the fields for our crops, the ewes, their lamb and the cattle are let into the fields after spending the winter months in a warm, dry barn at our farm. During May we have a local person come to shear the sheep, to help prevent the ewes from overheating during the summer months.
We have roughly 250 beef cattle from calves to steers (castrated males) and heifers, which we buy from a local dairy farmer and look after them for around 3 years, until they are sold on.
We grow maize and wheat to feed our cattle and sheep, the straw is used for animal bedding. Through the summer months we are busy making hay and silage from our grass fields to feed our animals. We produce extra hay and straw to sell in our shop.
Varieties Of Plants And Seeds
Garden Decorations And Sundries
We grow a couple of acres of potatoes to sell in the farm shop. They are planted in May and harvested from mid-July to September, they are stored in a barn on the farm and processed weekly from September to June ready for sale. The varieties include Marfona, Desiree, Wilja and Maris Piper. A natural way to help prevent a build up of diseases and pests in the soil is a 3 year crop rotation, so you will never see the same crop growing 2 years in a row in any field, either grass, potatoes or one of the crops we grow.
We sell hundreds of pumpkins & squashes for Halloween, not just for decoration, they are edible as well and are all grown on the farm. We plant them in May and the pumpkins are harvested when the plants start to die in September and the stored in a barn until they are ready for sale from the end of September.
Throughout the year we buy small quantities of local piglets from a cousin, which are reared on the farm to ensure they have a good quality of life. They end up being sold through the farm shop.
In August, our baby turkeys and cockerels arrive, they are well looked after by Jenny, especially in the first months as they need lots of care and attention. We keep them in a large open barn to protect them from predators and diseases. The whole process happens on the farm, and you can buy them oven ready for Christmas.
As Autumn/Winter sets in all the livestock are brought into the barns behind the farm shop to spend the winter out of the cold, wet weather, where they spend the days munching on the farm’s home produced crops.
